What Your Staff Needs to Know to Communicate with Spanish Speakers
Spanish that Works™ is different from traditional language programs. Grammar has been simplified and vocabulary is kept to a minimum, so students can focus on communication. A good deal of class time is spent actively practicing vocabulary and structures through dialogue role-play. The pronunciation guide trains American English speakers to speak and understand Spanish. Whenever possible, vocabulary has been chosen that is easy to say and remember and can work for a variety of purposes.
Language Specific to the Work Environment
Spanish that Works can be instantly tailored to fit the needs of a group or profession by supplementing the basic structures with specialized vocabulary. The 16-hour curriculum can be expanded for more in-depth learning, or streamlined for introductory workshops.
By introducing vocabulary specific to your work environment as the course is in progress, Spanish that Works can be used as the backbone for conversation classes such as Spanish for Business, Spanish for Medical and Healthcare Professionals, Spanish for Law Enforcement, Spanish for Customer Service, Spanish for Hotel and Restaurant, and Spanish for Construction. There are vocabulary modules already in place to adapt the course for Spanish for Teachers, Spanish for Librarians and Library Staff, and Spanish for City Court.
Practical Language and Focus on Communication
Your students will not conjugate verbs or read and answer questions in a complete sentence. Instead, they will learn to master the key words, expressions, and constructions necessary to actively participate in fast-paced conversation. They will learn how to make polite requests, interact with others socially, and provide or receive basic customer service.
You will teach key words that are specific to your students’ environment, along with social expressions such as Sorry, I don’t know, Well, then… , Excuse me, How nice! and Do you need help? You will then teach them to apply these key words to useful constructions such as Do you have (X)?, Where is (Y)?, and My son wants (Z). This will allow your students to build sentences quickly in conversation. You will also teach them practical strategies that will allow them to handle communicative situations with confidence.
With Spanish that Works, students not only acquire the practical skills that let them start speaking now, but they also internalize a solid foundation for more advanced study in the future. They gain proficiency quickly which gives them confidence and motivation to learn more.
